Our October presenter will be Jacalyn Giacalone Willis, Ph.D., a biolologist by training, and founding director of the PRISM science education center at Montclair State University. When our presidentheard Jackie speak at a dinner three years ago, he thought Wow! MSE members -- and middle school parents, teachers and students -- need to hear her inspiring story of how to engage students in a love of science. PRISM, Professional Resources in Science & Mathematics, is also the home of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Center for Science Teaching and Learning,

Jackie, and husband Greg Willis, a naturalist experienced in monitoring wildlife populations, have been working on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, for 35 years where they've camera-trapped ocelots, puma, and jaguar and their prey populations. (See jaguar photo.) Some of their work is documented in the Smithsonian Channel "Mysteries of the Rainforest." Their long-term interest in bringing scientists to K-12 classrooms resulted in creating the Rainforest Connection Live! videoconference program that has continued to connect children and scientists for conversations about research methods since 2003.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, October 19th at the Union Congregational Church, 176 Cooper Avenue, Upper Montclair 07043.

The presentations will begin at 8:00 PM. Children are most welcome. Dessert and beverages will be served at 7:30PM. All meetings of the Montclair Society of Engineers are free and open to the public.
