The Montclair High School swim team competed in their first meet of the season against Glen Ridge High School on Tuesday, November 28. The Mounties scored decisive victories over both the Glen Ridge girls, 131-37, and the boys, 122-43.

The Montclair girls achieved first place in every event and every relay, led by several impactful swimmers: junior Kathrynna Demetillo (200 Free, 100 Fly), junior Maya Crawford (50 Free, 100 Free), freshman Millie Steffe (500 Free), freshman Devon Muldoon (200 I.M., 100 Back), and freshman Gaea Caro (100 Breast). The Mounties freshmen girls definitely made their mark, scoring top points for the team. The strength and depth of the girls’ team was also evident in the medley and freestyle relay wins which included several other MHS swimmers: Mia Padberg (sophomore), Carly Fazendin (sophomore), Skyler Edinburg (sophomore), AJ Crandall (senior), and Josephine Myung (sophomore). Other notable swims included senior Jordan Caro (200 Free), senior Amy Chen (50 Free), and junior Louisa Skerry (500 Free).

The Montclair boys also dominated the night, winning all but two events and one relay. A strong all-freshmen relay team opened and closed the night with wins in the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay: Alex Petroff (Back), Sumner Smith (Breast), Jarrett Driever (Fly), and Mizell McEachin (Free). Jarrett Driever and Mizell McEachin also achieved impressive first place finishes in the 200 I.M. and 100 Breast (Driever) and 100 Free (McEachin). Other standouts and first place finishers included senior Steven Iovine (50 Free), junior Bailey Morganlander (200 Free), and sophomore Tommy White (100 Fly). The strength and promise of the boys’ squad was evident with second place finishes across the board in every event and relay during the night: Sophomore Roman Miklaszewski had two strong second place swims (200 Free and 500 Free); junior Garrett Chow finished second in the 100 Fly; and McEachin (50 Free), Petroff (200 I.M. and 100 Free), and Smith (100 Breast) also scored second place finishes. The boys’ 200 Free Relay team also came in a solid second place and included Chow, junior Lucas Pla-Silsby, freshman Caleb Foung, and junior Peter Emanuelli. The boys were only thwarted from first place in two events during the meet, both of which were won by Liam Hood, sophomore on the Glen Ridge team. Hood was also part of the only relay team to place in front of the Mounties.

Coach Ed Koenigsfest said, “Montclair Swimming got off to a great start this season with a dominant win over Glen Ridge. With the skill set of the freshmen swimmers combined with the experience of the upper classmen, I am confident this team will have another great season.” The Mounties take on Montclair Kimberley Academy Friday night 12/1 at MSU’s Panzer Pool at 8:15 pm.
