The Montclair Society of Engineers hosts its annual High School Robotics Extravaganza, featuring local high school teams sponsored by the society in the FIRST Robotics Competition. The teams compete each year in state and national events. Returning this year to the MSE are the Montclair High School Bulldogs, who won a Gracious Professionalism Award at Montomery NJ, the Clifton High School Mechanical Mustangs, who made into the subdivision playoff at the National Championships, and introducing Paterson International High School Equitum Robotics, winner of the Rookie Inspiration Award and finalists at Bridgewater Raritan NJ.

This year’s challenge is FIRST POWER UP where the robots are supposed to be characters trapped with their human operators in a video game. To escape each alliance (group of three teams) need to gather “power cubes”, place them on one side of a balance while the opposing alliance puts them on the other side. Points are gained when the balance tilts in their direction side. Finally the robots climb up the structure. During different parts of the event, the robots run either autonomously or under remote control..

The teams will give a presentation on their designs and then demonstrate their robots.

This is a fun and fascinating experience for adults and kids alike.

All meetings of the Montclair Society of Engineers are free and open to the public.

Time: 7:00 PM, Friday, May 18 Dessert and beverages at 6:30.
