United Way of Northern New Jersey Women United and Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey came together on December 8 to bring holiday cheer to some 25 young girls experiencing homelessness.

The organizations hosted the girls at United Way’s Montclair location at 60 South Fullerton Avenue. The building’s auditorium was transformed into a winter wonderland by volunteers who assisted throughout the event.

The day featured craft making, cookie decorating, hot chocolate, lunch and games. The girls, who participate in Girl Scouts through the Juliette’s House program, which makes leadership experiences available at community shelters, also earned their jewelry badge by making beaded bracelets.

Helping at the event were Women United Leadership Giving Circle supporters and steering committee members, students from the Millburn High School United Way Club, United Way board of trustees members, United Way staff and community volunteers. In addition, the Millburn High School United Way Club organized a hat, glove and mitten drive for the girls.

Women United is a group of philanthropic women that fights to help ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and poverty-level residents in northern New Jersey become financially self-sufficient.
