In honor of Yogi Berra’s D-Day service to his country, the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center will host a drop-in resources fair for military veterans and their supporters, leveraging the universal attraction of sports – and Yogi – to provide assistance to individuals in need of help. The event, which is free to the public, is sponsored by the law firm Duane Morris.

From noon to 5pm on October 7 the Museum’s atrium will be filled with a wide selection of veterans’ service providers, offering guidance, information and resources that cover a range of interest areas, including:

· health administration

· benefits administration (i.e. claims, compensation)

· medical health resources

· mental health resources

· legal consultation

· community, town, county & state services

The event will also feature sports-based programming and activities throughout the day, including a panel discussion with former professional athletes Bruce Harper (NY Jets), Paul Mirabella (NY Yankees) and Karl Nelson (NY Giants); and a screening of the 1956 World Series Perfect Game, a one-of-a-kind event celebrating its 21st anniversary that weekend. The day will also include ballpark fare, crafts and a scavenger hunt for kids. At 2pm, sports writer Ron Kaplan will talk about his new book, Hank Greenberg in 1938: Hatred and Home Runs in the Shadow of War.

In conjunction with the Veterans Resources Fair, the Museum is opening a new temporary exhibition dedicated to Yogi’s military service, A Hero With Humility: Seaman Second Class Lawrence Peter Berra. The show will feature artifacts documenting Berra’s time in the U.S. Navy, as well as tributes and memorabilia focused on that period of his life.

“This drop-in Veterans Resources Fair is a first for the Museum, as we explore new ways to sustain Yogi’s values for a new generation,” says Eve Schaenen, the Museum’s Executive Director. “Yogi considered his military service to be one of his greatest contributions. We’re proud to reach out to military veterans and their families in his name, and are incredibly grateful to the vendors willing to join us in support of our efforts.”
